Web Design Tips: Use CSS to Adjust Opacity

Filed under: Web Design Tips, web designer — Tags: , , — admin @ 2:21 pm

The CSS opacity property lets web designers define how particular page elements will blend, adding both style and emphasis to important page sections.

Essentially, this property allows you to adjust an element’s translucency, changing the amount of diffused virtual light that seems to pass through a paragraph, image, or other page element. In this Web Design Tips, I will briefly discuss browser compatibility for this property, and then I’ll show you how to use the CSS opacity property to add emphasis to a product description.

We want someone with a passion for college basketball to help produce a tool that will be able to predict the NCAA Tournament field. We want to analyze all available data – from polls, to schedules, to statistics – and provide the end-user with a realistic output that predicts tournament teams.

Not only do we want our model to be able to produce a weekly ranking, we need it to produce a bracket at any point during the season that will allow us to list for fans, what the tournament field would look like if the season were to end at that point.

This is one in a series of sports related projects for our CRAYON.TV venture

Web Design Tips: Basic CSS for Headers

How your site looks matters. Even subtle improvements—like using fonts or colors that compliment your theme—can have a positive effect on how consumers rate the trustworthiness of your store.

According to a 2003 Stanford University study of 2,440 people, 46.2 percent of online shoppers gauge the credibility of an ecommerce site by how professional and eye-pleasing the site looks. In fact, rightly or wrongly, appearance is even more important to shoppers than the presence of a security banner promoting hacker or credit card safety.

In this edition of Web Design Tips, a recurring Practical Ecommerce feature, I will show you the ins and outs of basic header formatting using a cascading style sheet (CSS) and HTML. This feature is aimed at HTML and CSS novices who have very little design experience.

Keith Wright acknowledges he didn’t want to take the Multi-Media Computer Design course, which seemed like it was going to be a boring computer class. But his mother made him do it.

His attitude completely changed when he sat in with his two brothers on Saturday afternoons last year and learned how to work on photographs, design video games and create cartoons.

“When I found out we were going to create Web pages and videos, I was really excited about that,” says the 16-year-old Oak Park resident. “It’s so educational and fun.”

Wright got the opportunity to learn those computer skills at the Creation Station, a program that Keith Young, a 33-year-old Detroiter, founded in 2007. The program kicks off again at 1 p.m. Saturday with an open house at Vanguard Community Development Corporation in Detroit, which is run by Detroit’s Second Ebenezer Church.

Web Maintenance: Keep your site up to date—with a little help

One of the most important aspects of web site maintenance is content updates. New content in the form of new products and services, monthly special offerings, useful tips and noteworthy news articles and press releases will give your audience a reason to keep coming back to your site. This will also increase your chance of converting your visitor into a customer. If your web content is stale, visitors will search elsewhere for the things they need. It is therefore very important that the company web site is updated and enhanced regularly with new content and technology. See it as a way of protecting your site and investment.

As you think about upcoming maintenance you would like to perform on your site please consider these two tips that will help encourage returning web site visitors:

Make Your Content Relevant: Instead of filling your site with flashy graphics and useless information, utilize the space to provide content that is relevant to your product or service. Tools, calculators, free downloads, informative articles, and industry news are all sources of valuable content to site visitors.

Keep Your Content Fresh: If your content never changes, you will have a hard time getting returning web site visitors. People want to see new content that is frequently updated. By providing new and fresh content, you are constantly encouraging returning web site visitors. There are many things you can do to change the content without making a huge effort: begin a blog, write a regular newsletter, or offer promotions, coupons, and rewards. Monthly contests and prize giveaways are also a great way to encourage returning visitors.

Minnesotans advance to nationals in Microsoft web design contest

Gregory Wurm, a programmer and analyst at Web development firm Sierra Bravo, has always wanted to attend a technology conference, but his job title generally doesn’t afford him that opportunity.

Now, thanks to Microsoft (and to his own coding skills), Wurm will be traveling next month to one of the nation’s largest interactive conferences – South by Southwest, in Austin, Texas. The South by Southwest conference began as a music festival, but in 1994 it added the interactive (and film) element and since then has gained a strong following among Web developers, designers, entrepreneurs and new media professionals.
